600 years old Pope seals in “Plumpsklo”

Archaeologists discovered several “bulls in such a way specified” with excavations at the University of grab forest. They were in a latrine pit.

With excavations on the area of the University of grab forest archaeologists found four approximately 600 years old Pope seals in a latrine pit. The find is “sensational” according to data of the national office for soil care of monuments: Four Pope bulls so mentioned at a place to find, said department manager Hauke Jöns is very unusual on Thursday. In the past decade comparable seals are found despite intensive excavation activity in Germany only isolate.

The four round lead seals are about 3.5 centimeters large and weigh somewhat more than 50 gram. They originate from the Pontifikat from Pope Bonifatius IX., which was from 1389 to 1404 head of the catholic church. Whereupon the inscription refers VIIII on the front “BONIFATIUS.”. On the back are illustrations of the Apostel Petrus and Paulus. The seals are to be demonstrated later in the context of the exhibition “archaeology under the bitumen” in Wismar.
